The Impact
BBBSKC has proven its ability to change lives through its programs. BBBSKC was named the Big Brothers Big Sisters Agency of the Year in 2011 and its achievements routinely top the national averages. In Kansas City nearly 75% of matches stay together for more than 12 months, well above the national average of 61%. 71% of children in the program show improved academic performance and 68% have better school attendance.
Through the long-term relationships professionally arranged and supported by BBBSKC 98% of Littles say that their Big has a positive impact on their life, 96% say the program increased their self-esteem, 91% were introduced to new hobbies and activities, and 96% have avoided drug and alcohol use.
Over the past decade BBBSKC has nearly doubled the number of children served. This was accomplished through focused recruitment of Bigs to meet the needs of nearly 300 children waiting to be matched. Male and minority Bigs continue to be in high demand as the most suitable matches for many children on the waiting list.
